About Mr. Gutmacher
Jon H. Gutmacher is a criminal trial attorney whose office is located in the Central Florida region in the City of  Orlando, Florida. He received a BBA from the University of Miami in 1969, and a Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School in 1972, where he served briefly on the law review, and also was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award for Trial Advocacy. While in law school he worked as Chief Law Clerk for the Union County (New Jersey) Prosecutor’s Office where he wrote over 200 appellate briefs, including two to the United States Supreme Court. After graduating law school he moved to Florida, and served as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County from 1973-1978. During that time he served as a misdemeanor prosecutor, head of the appellate section, and later a felony division lead prosecutor. After leaving the Office, he went into private practice with various civil law firms, finally going out on his own.
Mr. Gutmacher was a member of the Appellate Court Rules Committee of The Florida Bar, and also served two terms as Chairman of the Traffic Court Rules Committee. He has written and lectured for CLE on such topics as Vehicular Manslaughter, Extraordinary remedies in criminal cases, and the Scientific Defenses in DUI cases; has coordinated and lectured on Police Misconduct in two seminars for Lorman Educational Services; and has been featured in several seminars on firearm and self defense issues. He also appeared on ABC Nightline with Ted Koppel on the subject of mercy killings, and was the featured guest on a cable television series on Second Amendment issues.
Jon H. Gutmcher is also the author of a leading treatise on Florida and Federal firearm and weapon laws, FLORIDA FIREARMS - Law, Use & Ownership. It has sold over 100,000 copies and is used extensively in the State of Florida. He is also an NRA-certified firearms instructor, and writes a monthly featured column for the Florida Sportsman’s Gazette. While previously working in the State Attorney's Office, he served as a field legal advisor to a narcotics strike force, participating in numerous drug raids, and was also a referral attorney for the Florida Association of State Troopers. He has the honor of previously having been Board Certified in the area of Criminal Trial Practice, although that certification has expired.
Mr. Gutmacher is a member of The Florida Bar, Orange County Bar Association, Central Florida Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Orange County Bar Judicial Relations Committee, NRA, and Gun Owners of America. He is authorized to practice before the United States Supreme Court, all Florida courts, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle District of Florida, and the Fifth and Eleventh Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal. He has tried before a jury as lead counsel: murder (death penalty), second degree murder, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, rape, kidnaping, robbery, burglary, grand theft, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, embezzlement, prostitution, DUI, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, domestic battery, carrying concealed weapons and firearms, illegal possession of machine guns and silencers, illegal importation of firearms, resisting arrest, indecent exposure, drug trafficking, and numerous other felony and misdemeanor cases. He has also tried several false arrest and malicious prosecution cases before the civil courts in the State of Florida. Mr. Gutmacher, as appellate counsel in Florida, has also handled numerous appeals before the Florida Supreme Court, District Courts of Appeal, Eleventh Circuit, and United States Supreme Court.
